Sundowns Break PSL Record To Edge Closer To League Glory

Mamelodi Sundowns eased to a 3-0 win over Chippa United at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday evening to edge closer to their eighth successive league title.

Miguel Cardoso managed to rotate his squad with the likes of Malibongwe Khoza, Denis Onyango, and Jayden Adams returning to the starting line-up, while star forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa made do with a place on the bench.

And despite dominating proceedings, the visitors defended well and had the odd chance on transitions, with Sinoxolo Kwayiba a threat alongside Bienvenu Eva Nga.

It took until the 29th minute for Sundowns to take the lead, via Iqraam Rayners, who moved one goal off Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s 13 in the race for the Lesley Manyethela Golden Boot award.

This settled proceedings and Jayden Adams made sure they went into the break with a further cushion, as they made it 2-0, five minutes before half-time with a tap-in inside the area.

Sundowns managed to see off the game in the second half with Thapelo Maseko rounding off the scoring and now need four points from their final three games to secure yet another league title.

In doing so, Masandawana also broke their own PSL record of most goals in a season, having now scored 57 – one more than the 56 they finished with in 2021/22.
