Sundowns Defeat Leaves League Title in Pirates’ Hands

TS Galaxy pulled off a massive shocker, edging Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 to hand the Betway Premiership title to Orlando Pirates on a silver platter.

Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George, and Mpho Mvelase all found the back of the net for Galaxy, outshining Brayan Leon’s brace.

Sundowns made three changes from the previous match’s starting line-up, bringing in Zuko Mdunyelwa, Kegan Johannes, and Arthur Sales to replace Khuliso Mudau, Khulumani Ndamane, and Tashreeq Matthews.

Meanwhile, Galaxy made two changes, starting Mlungisi Mbunjana and Victor Letsoalo in the places of Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi and Junior Zindonga. Masandawana showed early attacking intent but couldn’t capitalize on their chances.

Galaxy took the lead in the fifth minute via a Letsoalo penalty after Seluleko Mahlambi was brought down in the area. Sundowns attempted to bounce back quickly, but the Rockets remained resolute at the back.

In the 18th minute, Galaxy doubled their lead through Sedwyn George, who slotted home after being set up by Mahlambi. The visitors continued to push forward in an attempt to pull one back, but they couldn’t create many clear-cut chances.

In the 38th minute, Cardoso’s troops finally found the back of the net when Brayan Leon headed home from a Nuno Santos cross. A minute later, Sundowns were awarded a penalty after Mvelase handled the ball in the box; Leon stepped up and converted the equalizer to complete his brace.

The match reached the interval with the scoreline level at 2-2.

Straight after the restart, Galaxy reclaimed the lead through Mvelase, who found the net following a pass by Siphesihle Maduna as the Sundowns defense switched off.

The home side remained a constant threat, causing problems every time they poured forward in search of further goals. The Tshwane giants kept on knocking, seeking the leveller, but they found it difficult to find the breakthrough.

As the time went on, Sundowns looked to hurt Galaxy with a series of crosses, but the home side’s defence held firm, thwarting several opponents’ attacks. Siyadumuza shot-stopper Ira Tape was a pillar of strength for Bernard Parker’s charges, producing a string of crucial saves to keep his side competitive throughout the match.
