Tinkler Happy With ‘Ugly’ Win

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler says he saw bits of the gutsiness of his side from last season, in their 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in Polokwane over the weekend.

The result was a second successive win with the side maintaining as many clean sheets as well, to see themselves move to sixth position on the log with 29 points in 21 matches.

Tinkler says wants to see his charges get back to their principles and being gutsy, starting with shutting their opponents out – like they’ve done so often last season.

“We went last season, I think it was 14 clean sheets and that’s why we ended up where we ended up. So it’s about getting back to those principles,” he said.

“I saw a little bit of us last season again tonight. You know some of the games you’ve got to go and win it ugly by ensuring that you keep the clean sheet and somewhere along the line the opposition makes a mistake and you punish them. So that’s what we have done tonight.”

Tinkler also went on to praise goal scorer Nodada, who convinced him in attack and defence.

“He [Nodada] played a very important role in terms of our structure today because he had to play a double role of helping us defensively as a double six because of the movement of [Sammy] Seabi and [Pogiso] Mahlangu,” he added.

“He needed to attack them but once we won the ball we wanted him to get forward and play as an eight and he has done exactly that and that’s what led to his chance and the goal he scored.

“So a lot of credit to him he had to work extremely hard and you know a gutsy performance from him and everybody.”

City are away at Maritzburg United in the league on Saturday.
