Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler says even though midfielder Keletso Makgalwa has done well he is not sure if he deserves to be named Player of the Season over someone like Lucas Ribeiro at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Makgalwa has played 29 matches in all competitions for Sekhukhune this season and has four goals and 11 assists to his name in the league. The 28-year-old was also voted Betway Premiership Player of the Month for April days before his side’s 1-1 league draw against Kaizer Chiefs at the Peter Mokaba Stadium with the draw extending Babina Noko’s unbeaten streak to six matches.
With the conversation of potential player of the season candidates on-going, Tinkler said his player’s stats look good, but they aren’t better than Ribeiro’s and he’d choose the latter.
“I think you go look at his [Makgwalwa] stats and I think he’s most assists in the league,” said Tinkler to iDiski Times when asked about Makgalwa’s chances in the category.
“So, I’m assuming that would be taken into consideration. To be honest, I haven’t looked at all the other stats to compare.
“I do know that the boy at Sundowns [Lucas] Ribeiro, he’s probably got a lot of assists himself, but not only the assists he’s got a lot of goals.
“So, if I had to choose it would probably be him [Ribeiro], but I haven’t seen the stats. I’m not 100% sure I’m using my own memory also the amount of goals he scored this season.”
