Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. has opened up on the transfer of promising young defender Aden McCarthy to Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FK.
Both clubs officially confirmed the move of the 22-year-old centre-back on Tuesday, following a stellar 2025/26 campaign in the colours of the Phefeni Glamour Boys.
In what was his first full season with Amakhosi’s senior team, McCarthy racked up 31 appearances across all competitions, firmly cementing his place in the starting lineup.
The commanding defender even chipped in with two goals, playing a pivotal role in helping the Glamour Boys secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership and subsequent qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.
Motaung Jr. expressed his delight at the move, noting that the youngster’s impending participation in European club qualifiers will expose him to an incredibly high level of football early in his career.
“We can confirm that we have agreed to release Aden after being approached by Sabah FK,” said the Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr.
“We are proud that he will compete in the qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League.
“We know Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe, and we are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”
