Who Stays, Who’s Gone? Motsepe Explains Downs Changes

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Thlopie Motsepe has detailed the structural changes done at the club after Miguel Cardoso replaced Manqoba Mngqithi as head coach.

On Tuesday, Sundowns had invited local media to a press conference, where they confirmed that Cardoso would take over in the latest “restructuring” of the club’s technical team.

Mngqithi who was in charge of 22 games has been sacked, alongside Romain Folz and Wendell Robinson, while Steve Komphela and Kennedy Mweene stay as part of the new technical team.

“This was based on the need for us to redirect, reenergise to make sure that our club achieves it’s targets and the milestones we’ve set for ourselves,” Motsepe stated.

“This was by no means an easy decision. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi and coach Wendell Robinson were two coaches who have been with the club for over two decades – 22 years combined,” Motsepe stated.

“They have been with us during the club’s most successful period and they have been incredible servants for the football club.

“Coach Romain Folz, who also joined us very recently also was a very important player and part of this technical team. His attitude, his energy and his desire to improve is something that all of his colleagues appreciated very much.

“But again I say we needed another direction. But we do that knowing that as much as we’re moving forward, we as a football club have a commitment to developing African and South African coaches and players.

“Although we will do this change in leadership, and restructuring we will be holding on to two coaches, namely coach Steve Komphela and coach Kennedy Mweene who will still be part of this new technical team.”
