Breaking: Sundowns Make Decision On Mngqithi

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the exit of coach Manqoba Mngqithi after their 1-1 draw against ASFAR in the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns are currently top of the league with seven wins and one defeat in their opening eight games but fell short in the MTN8, losing to Stellenbosch and were stunned in the Carling Knockout final by Magesi with a comeback 2-1 win for the rookies.

However, it’s been the lack of convincing performances expected of the squad since Mnqgithi replaced Rulani Mokwena, with a clear mandate of higher chance creation and goals added to the results.

Sundowns made the decision on Monday after a crunch meeting with the club’s hierarchy as they now look to take the club to the next level this season ahead of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup where they were drawn alongside Fluminense, Ulsan and Borussia Dortmund.

On Tuesday, Sundowns announced that Manqoba Mngqithi has been sacked, with former ES Tunis head coach Miguel Cardoso taking over.

“The Sundowns board and management have decided to implement a restructuring and change in the coaching department,” Motsepe said during a press conference on Tuesday.

“Allow me to introduce the man who will be leading that technical team – he is a man who we believe has the right type of personality to lead a club like Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, he has the ability and he has the desire to take us to the highest level and to succeed as a football club.

“Please allow me to welcome the new Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Mr Miguel Cardoso.”
