Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has cast doubts whether his key striker Khanyisa Mayo will be ready to face Kaizer Chiefs after the extensive travels with Bafana Bafana this week.
Mayo, 25, was recalled by Hugo Broos after he started the new year with a bang, netting three goals in four matches, but also received his fair share of criticism by the Bafana coach.
Last season’s joint DStv Premiership top goalscorer – alongside Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile – played 80 minutes in the 1-1 draw with Andorra and 10 minutes in the 3-3 draw with Algeria.
Mayo has another chance to impress on domestic level when City host Chiefs at Athlone Stadium at 15:30 on Saturday, but Tinkler says he isn’t sure whether the prolific striker will be ready.
“The trip to Algeria we’ve experienced is tough, two hours from where he is to the airport, six hours a flight to Dubai, a four-hour layover in Dubai, eight-hour flight to Johannesburg, two-hour layover in Johannesburg,” Tinkler told the media.
“Another two hours flight [to Cape Town] and I will have him the day before the game. So it begs the question, is he going to be ready or not?”
