Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom should’ve received a straight red card in their Betway Premiership clash against Royal AM, according to former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani.
Amakhosi squandered a 2-0 first-half lead and were pegged back by John Maduka’s side who levelled matters in the last minute of regulation time to draw 2-2.
An incident which caught the attention of many questioned why Blom was not given his marching orders after an infringement that saw him foul Sabelo Sithole on the edge of the box with no other players around them.
Speaking to SABC Sport’s Soccerzone on Monday evening, “The Principal” said referee Jelly Chavani issued the wrong card as Blom should’ve been sent for an early shower for a professional foul.
“There’s Blom there that committed an infringement,” Hlungwani said.
“If you look at the DOGSO elements [Denying an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity], direction of play we give it a tick, distance to goal we give it a tick, likelihood and control of the ball tick, number of defenders tick.
“A wrong card was given here because all DOGSO elements have been completed, so therefore, you can see Jelly Chavani giving a yellow.
“So, that was supposed to be a red card if you can check because it’s almost one-on-one with the keeper and you can see that there is no other player except the goalkeeper.

“A hand is used and a leg is used to trip him or to impede him.
“So, therefore incorrect decision by the referee Jelly Chavani. A wrong card was issued.”
