Former FIFA referee Ace Ncobo has given his verdict on Orlando Pirates‘ penalty against Chippa United, saying the referee made the wrong decision.
The Buccaneers return to the Betway Premiership on Tuesday after qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stages on Saturday.

But there is still a debate around Pirates’ last league match, when they received a penalty just before the half-time break after trailing 1-0 thanks to a wonder striker by Andile Jali.
Tshegofatso Mabasa stepped up to make it 1-1 in the fourth minute of first-half injury-time after Saleng was brought down by Malebogo Modise – but Ncobo insisted it should’ve been a free-kick outside the box.
“With tackles as opposed to holding, it is where the incident starts rather than where it ends. With holding it’s where the incident ends rather than where it starts,” he explained on Extra-Time.
“So this is tackling and no matter where it ends, if the first points of contact is an infringement outside the box, which is exactly the moment when that left leg misses the ball, goes over the ball and trips the opponent, clearly taking place outside the box.
“The shin is the part of the leg that commits the foul. Momentum carries both players into the penalty area and that is why he falls inside. And with a tackle it is where it starts and not where it ends.
“So if it’s starts outside the box, that’s where the free-kick needs to be.”
