Al Ahly Sack Coach After CAFCL Knockout

Al Ahly have sacked head coach Marcel Koller just a day after they were knocked out of the CAF Champions League by Mamelodi Sundowns.

Koller saw his side getting knocked out on the away goal rule after a late own goal by Yasser Ibrahim saw Mamelodi Sundowns book their ticket for the CAF Champions League final.

It meant the Egyptian giants failed to reach the final for the first time in six years, which caused the club’s board to call an emergency meeting.

In the meeting it was decided to part ways with the Swiss tactician, who had lifted 11 trophies with the club.

Koller himself had expressed his disappointment with his side’s “unlucky” exit from the CAF Champions League.

“We are all deeply disappointed, we didn’t lose the game,” he stated after the match.

“We scored an own goal and were knocked out. It’s not fun. We wanted to write history, it didn’t work out and of course we are not happy with the outcome.

“We were leading 1-0 and of course we won’t all run to the front and attack – a 1-0 was going to be enough.

“Hence, we tried to defend well. In the end, we didn’t expect the own goal, but it meant it wasn’t enough.”

Ahly have only won two of their last nine matches, and had dropped to second place in the Premier League.
