Al Hilal Omdurman have made a request to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to allow VAR to be used in their vital Group A clash against African champions Al Ahly.
With Mamelodi Sundowns already advanced to the quarter-finals as group winners, a win for either side would see them join the South African champions in the last eight.
A draw would be enough for Pitso Mosimane’s side and with all that is at stake, Hilal has asked CAF to implement the technology in what could be a season-defining game.
Mosimane has been vocal for VAR to be used in the group stages and not just during the knockout phase of the competition, mentioning it in the last four of his post-match press conferences.
And Hilal have now concurred his sentiments with Zambian referee Janny Sikazwe said to have been selected as the official to officiate the highly-anticipated showdown.
Sikazwe made global headlines during the recent Africa Cup of Nations where he blew the full-time whistle in the 85th and 89th minute of the game before it was later relayed by CAF that he was suffering from heatstroke.
Should he be confirmed as the official, it will be the first CAF game he’s been appointed to since the controversial match between Mali and Tunisia, in which the West Africans edged the Carthage Eagles 1-0.
