CAFCL Last 8 & Downs’ Potential QF Opponents Confirmed

All quarter-final spots of this year’s CAF Champions League were confirmed after the conclusion of the group stages, with Wydad Athletic Club suffering a shock exit and Mamelodi Sundowns’ potential Last 8 opponents confirmed.

Wydad, last year’s runners-up who knocked out Mamelodi sundowns in the semi-final, did beat Group B winners ASEC Mimosas 1-0 on Saturday, but still only finished in third spot after Simba beat Morena Rameroboli’s Jwaneng Galaxy 6-0 to finish eight goals ahead of Wydad, with both level on nine points.

Earlier in the campaign, Wydad suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Galaxy, which ultimately cost them a spot in the knockout stages, with Mimosas and Simba progressing from Group B.

Mamelodi Sundowns once again topped their CAFCL group after beating TP Mazembe 1-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday. Masandawana finished on 13 points, while Mazembe stayed on 10.

In Group D, Percy Tau’s Al Ahly ended on 12 points, while Young Africans managed to upset CR Belouizdad and finish above the Algerian giants based on goal difference.

On Saturday evening, Esperance de Tunis beat Al Hilal Omdurman 1-0 to book the final quarter-final ticket, joining Petro de Luanda from Group C.

The date for the draw for the last eight is yet to be announced by CAF, but Sundowns will be seeded as one of the group winners.

As a consequence, they can only face Simba, Young Africans or ES Tunis.
