Beaumelle Credits Downs’ Maturity, Makes Masandawana Claim

Espérance Sportive de Tunis head coach Patrice Beaumelle has pointed to tactical maturity and the collective experience of Mamelodi Sundowns’ players as the defining factor in his side’s CAF Champions League semi-final elimination on Saturday.

Speaking in the press conference after the 1-0 defeat at Loftus Versfeld, which confirmed a 2-0 aggregate exit, Beaumelle offered a candid and considered assessment of why Sundowns ultimately proved the stronger side across the two legs.

“It’s a very good question, it’s a matter of maturity, but as well players used to playing together, to combine,” Beaumelle said when asked by iDiski Times whether tactical maturity was the difference in the result.

The Frenchman drew directly on his experience at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led Angola and came up against a Bafana Bafana side stacked with Sundowns personnel.

“A few months ago I was in the Africa Cup of Nations with Angola — we played Bafana Bafana. And we saw a lot of players of Sundowns, so they are used to playing together, in the national team, this season, playing Africa Cup of Nations, Champions League. Of course you get used to playing with pressure, to play with intensity, to be efficient.”

Beaumelle acknowledged that his own squad has not yet reached that level of collective resilience, identifying it as the primary area of growth needed heading into next season.

“It’s maybe what we lack this season,” he admitted.

Despite the disappointment, the Espérance coach spoke warmly of his opponents after the final whistle, revealing he personally sought out Sundowns players in the aftermath of the defeat – including goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

“I was fighting, I was not happy today. I went to meet the players, congratulate them – Williams, I know him very well. I wish them all the best to the final.

“They have to win their second star to chase after us, because we have four. So, I wish them all the best — but yeah, maturity is very important at such a level.”

Sundowns now stand on the cusp of a first CAF Champions League title since 2016 – with their opponents in the final confirmed as FAR Rabat after an all-Moroccan semi-final against RS Berkane.
