Cardoso On Europeans Being Escorted From Downs

New Mamelodi Sundowns coach says he is not looking at the relatively poor performance of previous European coaches at the club, but is focussed on writing his own history.

The Portuguese tactician has become the latest coach from Europe to be giving a chance to steer the Masandawana ship to success.

Sundowns, though, don’t have the best record with European coaches after the likes of Henri Michel (19 games), Hristo Stoichkov (30 games) and Johan Neeskens (50 games) all failed to reach the high expectations at Chloorkop.

But Cardoso insisted he is not looking at the past but focussed on working hard to achieve the club’s objectives.

“I didn’t know that,” he told journalists on Friday.

“But I also didn’t know that in Tunisia a foreign coach had never reached the final of the CAF Champions League and I did it.

“No one has ever won an 8-0 match (in the Champions League) and we did it. No one had ever as much ball possession as we had last year in the Champions League group stages in our home game against ASEC Mimosas.

“I don’t think about what happened in the past, I look forward to the future. I’m not comfortable in the zone that I am, but I like to be out of my comfortzone and express myself and take a team to the next level.

“We should look forward and not stay attached to what happened in the past. We don’t work for records, we dream alone but we work to make the dreams come true together.

“But we are objective people, who work hard to reach these dreams and objectives and go forward on them.

“Day-by-day we will give our best to make these things happen. Also, this club has high records and we understand and respect the heritage, but we want to be part of it. And we want to make our own history by going every day with the standard the club has and be loyal to them and to ourselves, to myself and things will happen in a natural way.”

Cardoso’s first test will be Sundowns’ CAF Champions League clash with Moroccan champions Raja Club Athletic.
