Former Orlando Pirates captain Happy Jele is pleading with his former club to extend Jose Riveiro’s contract for a further two years after proving his worth by winning five trophies in his three seasons.
When Riveiro arrived at Pirates, there were many question marks, and many football lovers scrutinized his coaching abilities since he had never coached any big team before.
In his first five months with the club, he won the MTN8 and followed that up with the Nedbank Cup, something Pirates haven’t done in a while by winning a trophy double.
Since then, the MTN8 trophy has become more of a culture at Pirates as he won it every season and the Nedbank Cup in the 2023/24 season.
“Magents”, who spoke to iDiski Times writer Lethabo Kganyago, in edition 183, believes that Riveiro has proved himself beyond and he wishes that the Buccaneers can offer him another two years of stay at the club.
“I’m definitely sure that he needs to extend. You look at his CV the way he started. No one believed that he’s a great coach, but he showed,” Jele told iDiski Times.
“They were calling him a plumber before, but he proved them wrong that he’s a good coach.
“In one season he managed to get two trophies, another one, two trophies. In his third season he managed to get one, so I don’t think there is going to be someone to break that record. So now he’s looking for another one, maybe he can take the treble you never know. It’s a matter of the way they play.
“If they really want it, they can go for it. But for me, coming from Pirates I wish they can keep him, extend maybe for another two years and let’s see because he’s proven people wrong that he is a great coach, and we have seen it.”
