Komphela Cites Bafana Stars For Massive Cairo Challenge

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Steve Komphela says the international experience they have in the squad can propel them to continental glory this week.

Sundowns are littered with international experience with the Bafana Bafana squad in recent years dominated by the core of their squad that finished third in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, qualified for the 2025 AFCON and currently lead their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.

As such, Masandawana and Bafana have mutually benefitted from the experience gained as they continue to challenge at the upper echelons of African football – with that experience now needed to overcome Pyramids in the second leg CAF Champions League final with the game poised at 1-1 from the opening tie in Tshwane this past weekend.

“Sundowns is very experienced, we have been through rough terrains, we have people like Teboho Mokoena, Ronwen Williams, Khuliso Mudau and apart from being experience in club football, they come from the national team,” Komphela said.

“These players have impeccable international experience and exposure, so we’re not going to chicken out, we played in Morocco [and Tunisia] and were courageous, we went to Al Ahly and were courageous.

“We came through that, nothing will stop us, without being arrogant [as] we need to go there and play our game, I wish I could say that [about tactics away] but that would be sending information to them, let’s leave it there.”

The return leg is scheduled to take place in Cairo on Sunday at 30 June Stadium (19h00).
