Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi expressed his excitement about having two teams from South Africa qualifying for the CAF Champions’ League group stages.
Sundowns and Pirates both booked their ticket for the CAFCL group stages after eliminating Mbabane Swallows and Jwaneng Galaxy, respectively.

Pirates return to the CAFCL group stages for the first time since the 2018/19 season meanwhile, Sundowns qualified for CAFCL group stages for the 10th successive time.
Mngqithi says he would be happy if Pirates or Sundowns won the trophy to end the North African dominance in Africa’s elite club competition.
“I must congratulate Pirates first. It’s very good for a team like Pirates to be in the group stages, and for South Africa to have two teams in the Champions League group stages,” Mngqithi told the media.
“That’s when you start to maximise the chances of a South African team winning the Champions League and it will be nice if both teams could go to the next round which is quarter-finals.
“Once we are there anything is possible and it will nice if we don’t win it and it is won by Pirates or if Pirates does not win, we win it just like Zamalek SC has been doing with Al Ahly for the longest time in Champions League, so it would be nice to get ourselves to that level.
“It’s not only the dominance of the North Africans but also in the SADEC we are well-represented and I’m very excited about Pirates.”
