Mayele Stuns Pirates With Late Winner In Cairo

Pyramids will meet Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League final after beating Orlando Pirates 3-2 in Cairo on Friday evening.

In what was the more entertaining of the two semi-finals over both legs, Pirates were aiming to secure their place in the final for the first time since 2013, when they fell to Al Ahly.

Relebohile Mofokeng got the scoring underway at the 30 June Stadium with a stunning low effort but was quickly pegged back by DR Congo international Fiston Mayele on the brink of half time.

However, via the away goals ruling, Pirates still held the advantage going into the break against the Egyptian Premier League leaders on their home turf.

The action didn’t end there as Mohau Nkota netted a stunning strike from range less than 10 minutes into the second half, but Pyramids substitute and Egypt international Ramadan Sobhi levelled the scores once again short after.

Just after making his way off the bench, he smashed home a bullet header past Sipho Chaine to set up a nervy second half for the vistors, despite having the slender away goal advantage.

And Jose Riveiro’s side were seemingly heading to an all South African final for an historic event in Mzansi next month but Mayele had other ideas and netted their third goal with five minutes to go to reach their first-ever final in Africa’s elite club competition.
