Rulani On Predicting Pyramids Would Beat Sundowns In CAFCL Final

Former Wydad Athletic Club head coach Rulani Mokwena has made a bold claim that Pyramids FC were the better team than Mamelodi Sundowns because of the core they kept as well as the number of goals they scored.

Mokwena recently parted ways with the Red Castle outfit after just a season in Morocco’s Botola Pro following an inconsistent run of results.

The former Sundowns mentor is back in Mzansi and has been heavily linked with a return to Orlando Pirates while links to Egyptian giants Zamalek have also gained momentum of late.

Mokwena admitted that he was not surprised to see Pyramids coming out victorious because they kept the majority of their players since last season and hit the back of the net in the Champions League regularly this season.

“I called it immediately after the group stages,” Mokwena said on Soccer Africa.

“Because I remember last season while I was still at Sundowns, we played Pyramids twice. We played them match-day three in the group stages, and we drew 0-0 at home.

“But in Cairo on match-day minus 2, I kept the players for a five-hour video session at Sundowns. And I was not even aware it was that long. But there was just so much to cover about this team.

“And this season when I saw the team developing and still the same players – Ramadan Sobi, Mayele, Hafes, Fhati, Toure in the midfield, Lamin – it’s almost the same team.

“And I think they’ve won nine out of 12 matches this season and scored 24 goals and you look at Sundowns whose only scored nine and won only three out of 12.

“And that already tells you I think they were really, really the best team in the Champions League.”
