Tau’s Al Ahly Set New CAFCL Record

Al Ahly have set a new record in the CAF Champions League after their 3-0 win over TP Mazembe.

The Red Devils, who are chasing a record-extending 12th African Champions League title, will face Esperance Sportive de Tunis in the final.

This after they secured a 3-0 second-leg win over the five-time champions in Cairo with Mohamed Abdelmonem, Wessaam Abou Ali and Akram Tawfik scoring.

Ali, a mid-season R34-million signing from IK Sirius, starred alongside South African forward Tashreeq Matthews last season in Sweden, and has made an immediate impact with five goals in his first five games.

He started at the top of the front three alongside Ahmed Abdelkader and Percy Tau for the Egyptian giants, as they became the first club to reach five consecutive finals in Africa’s elite club competition.

Having won it back-to-back under Pitso Mosimane, before Wydad Atheltic Club ended the run, Ahly are now seeking back-to-back titles under Marcel Koller.

The 63-year-old Swiss coach has won seven trophies and a bronze medal at the FIFA Club World Cup since taking charge on 9 Septmber 2022 after succeeding Ricardo Soares.
