Adams Scores At Loftus As Stellies Book Place In CAFCC Quarters

Stellenbosch booked their place in the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup with a game to spare after a 2-0 win over Stade Malien at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.

Jayden Adams, who is on the brink of joining Mamelodi Sundowns, poetically scored on the home ground of Masandawana in what’s expected to be his final game for his hometown club.

Stellies and the visitors played an open game with chances aplenty in a rainy Tshwane and despite spurning several chances, and Sage Stephens making a couple of impressive saves, they took control before the half-hour mark as Fawaaz Basadien opened the scoring.

His penalty was followed up by a towering header from Adams just before the break as he rose highest to meet Basadien’s pin-point corner at the far post.

The win for Steve Barker’s side sees them qualify with tournament favourites RS Berkane out of Group B, with a game to spare as they travel to Morocco next week to face the two-time champions in what’s likely to be a dead rubber fixture.

It marks an impressive feat for the South African debutants in the competition, having lost their opening two games and now storming to three consecutive wins to seal qualification with nine points from five games.
