Stellenbosch FC forward Andre De Jong has admitted the side’s CAF Confederation Cup trip to Egypt earlier this month ranks among the best moments of his career.
Stellies travelled to Egypt’s capital to play defending champions Zamalek in the 2nd leg of their quarter-final where they scored and dumped Zamelk out of the competition. This was a historic moment for the side who playing continental football for the first time.

De Jong told iDiski Times Editor Rob Delport in edition 201 of the newspaper that it was a special trip where he and teammates stood to be counted reminding him of his time with AmaZulu in the CAF Champions league in DR Congo.
“Of course, just an incredible win away in Egypt,” De Jong told IDiski Times.
“It was my first time going to Egypt, and playing in the Cairo International Stadium was incredible. And to play against a powerhouse of African football in terms of Zamalek, and to get a result across two legs, was very special for the club. I think it has just reinforced this trend that we can almost beat anyone, I think, on our day, when we do turn up and play with the cohesion and togetherness that I think we’ve shown over the last couple of seasons, that we’re a very hard team to beat.
“I think it’s probably one of my most memorable wins that I’ve had since being on the African continent. I think it’s right up there with the one I had with AmaZulu when we progressed through the preliminary stages of CAF against TP Mazembe in the DRC of Congo. That was a very, very tough, tough game. And the gamesmanship, also off the pitch, was incredible to progress through that tie. I think I’d put them on equal par of some of my best experiences, in terms of against all odds and progressing through.”
