Former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana has openly criticised Kaizer Chiefs for their on-field showboating performance last weekend.
Amakhosi began dribbling for display during the CAF Confederation Cup second leg after they had taken a comfortable 3-0 lead against AS Simba.
They ultimately won the tie with a 3-1 aggregate score, thereby securing their spot in the group stages.
Speaking on SABC Sport’s Soccer Zone, Kekana criticised the Soweto giants, arguing that the showboating showed disrespect for the opponents. He asserted that Chiefs would never attempt such antics if they were chasing a winning goal or under pressure.
Furthermore, he warned that showboating invites injuries, as opponents may retaliate by kicking the players.
“My question is can you do that when the score is 0-0? Can you do that when the score is 1-0 against you? Can you do that when we want a winning goal?” he asked.
“You have to respect the opponents…please. Because if they do that to you when you’re losing a match, I’m sure you can get a red card because you’ll want to kick [them].
“That’s something I don’t condone as a former footballer because I know what it means when you’re losing the match and people start doing showboating.”
Kekana stated he only supports showboating when it serves a purpose—specifically, when players dribble past opponents to create an attack and score a goal.
“When doing this, dribble passing the defenders and going to score, I love it,” he added.
“There’s a player that did that this past weekend and I loved it. When it’s like this [showboating] you’re inviting injuries, people will get angry and [kick you].”
