Barker Breaks Silence On Matsheke & Sekgotha Exits

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has spoken about Kgaogelo Sekgota and Darrel Matsheke’s surprise exits from the club for the first time.

Stellies announced the departure of Sekgota early in February after only six months at the club. In the statement that was released by the club, it didn’t state the reason for his departure. Sekgota featured in 17 matches in all competitions for Barker’s team.

A month later the Cape Winelands side released a statement confirming the shock departure of Matsheke. The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder won two man-of-the-match awards in the 13 matches he played in all competitions and scored the winning penalty in the shootout as Stellenbosch won the Carling Knockout, their first-ever major trophy in December.

In the statement the club confirmed that this was because he transgressed the club’s internal code of conduct. Barker explained that the club tried to help both but at some point, they had to make a decision.

“One of our mottos as a club is more than football,” Barker told the media after his club’s Nedbank Cup win over Milford on Friday.

“So we’re there to support and help players, encourage them to be professional about what they do, and in both instances, we were there to support and help the players and give them a sort of level of counselling and support throughout.

“Unfortunately sometimes you just reach a stage where you cannot continue with inexcusable behaviour and the club has to make the stand.”
