Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker had special praise for two of the heroes of Carling Knockout final penalty shootout, former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Darrel Matsheke and Diski Challenge star, Mervin Boji.
The 22-year-old Boji showed great composure when taking his spot-kick, while Matsheke delivered the final blow to TS Galaxy to win the game 5-4.
Matsheke, a former Chiefs academy player, who was plucked from obscurity by Gavin Hunt during his stint at Naturena, spent two seasons out on loan after Hunt’s exit – at Uthongathi and Swallows FC, before being released earlier this year.
He was a free agent until Stellies signed him October, following Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s move to Naturena.
“It’s nice to see and, you know, Mervin Boji has been playing for our DDC team for a couple of years,” Barker told SuperSport TV.
“He’s a goal scorer, been scoring goals. He’s a trustworthy penalty taker.
“But you know, Darrel Matsheke was club-less. He was released from Kaizer Chiefs. He was training at Casric [Stars], trying to earn himself a contract.
“He’s come to us, he’s been absolutely superb and I’m just really proud for him to to score the winning goal for us. So ja, very, very proud.”
