Khune On Man Of The Match Performance, Explains Moments Of Error

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was elated with his Man of the Match performance in the Carling Cup against Stellenbosch FC, and also explained why there were a few moments of error in his game.

Khune, 36, captained the PSL All Stars, as they beat Carling Knockout champions Stellenbosch FC 2-1 at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

The Amakhosi shot stopper was voted the Man of the Match and walked away with R100,000 after being suspended from football by his club, but insisted he didn’t have a point to prove.

“I wasn’t here to prove any point to anybody,” he said on SABC Sport.

“I was here to honour the game that I was voted for to come and represent everyone that has voted for me.

“So I’m happy that I came with a positive mindset, with a winning mentality. All the players have played their part today.

“We only had two days to prepare for this game and obviously facing the current champions of Black Label 2023, it wasn’t going to be easy, because people were doubting that we were going to match them, because they are a team that’s been assembled a couple of years ago, we were only chosen a couple of weeks ago.

“We showed the fans and the people that have voted why they voted for us. We had to represent them with pride and dignity and I’m happy that everyone who came out here witnessed the star players they voted for and they managed to put a smile on their faces.”

Throughout the match, Khune showed some moments of magic but also had a few incidents of error, saying they were based on a bit of rustiness after he’s trained on his own for the last few weeks.

“It’s both [rustiness and weather]. I haven’t trained as a goalkeeper for the past couple of weeks. When I got here, it was only my first two sessions,” he added.

“I’ve been training at home, I’ve been picking up weights and doing a lot of running. So I missed goalkeeping sessions but I’m happy that I was able to pull out such a great performance for the fans.

“I think goalkeeping runs in my blood, it runs in my veins. I’m happy that the guys also came to the party and we shone as a team and I’d like to congratulate them and thank everyone who has voted for the All Star players to represent them.”
