Chiefs Dent Pirates Title Hopes With Derby Win

Kaizer Chiefs dented Orlando Pirates’ league title hopes after a 2-0 win in their DStv Diski Challenge Soweto Derby.

Stellenbosch remained five points behind Sundowns after suffering a 2-1 defeat against Cape Town Spurs.

Khaya Mfecane and Tasreeq Manuel were on the scoresheet for Spurs, meanwhile, Mervin Boji scored the solitary goal for Stellies.

The Soweto derby closed the weekend at Tsakane Stadium with Pirates having to win to close the gap between them and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The game started with high intensity but there were no threats. Chiefs had few box entries, but the final touch kept on letting down Donnay Jansen and Siphesihle Tati.

Naledi Hlongwane thought he has found the back of the next after netting a rebound following a save from Zoey Monyepao. But he was ruled offside.

In the 63rd minute, Bucs committed a foul on Ntandoyenkosi Nkosi a few yards outside the 18 area. Xolani Cossa stepped up and hit a brilliant freekick which took a bounce and beat Zoey Monyepao to make it 1-0 for Chiefs.

Vela Khumalo’s side wanted more, and the confidence was there to take shots outside the box, 67th minute Kgaogelo Ramashu took a shot, but it didn’t trouble Monyapao.

Chiefs made it 2-0 on the 77th minute after Tati played a defence-splitting pass to set Naledi Hlongwane who made no mistake and found the back of the net. Amakhosi moved to one point behind Pirates.

Sunday results:

  • Cape Town City 4-1 Chippa United
  • Polokwane City 1-1 Sekhukhune United
  • Cape Town Spurs 2-1 Stellenbosch FC
  • Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Orlando Pirates
