Chiefs Sink Pirates In Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs came from a goal down to claim bragging rights and three points against Orlando Pirates in an entertaining DStv Diski Challenge Soweto Derby.

The Soweto derby was the last DStv Diski Challenge match in 2024, as the players will be allowed to go on break before returning next year. Both sides wanted to finish the year on a high note and keep their chances of challenging for the league title high.

Chiefs understood that a win would take them to second place, just two points behind league leaders Stellenbosch with a game in hand. Meanwhile, for the Buccaneers, three points would keep them in touching distance for the league title.

The first half didn’t meet the expectations, as both teams were not convincing in the final third, lacking that final touch, and it ended in a goalless draw.

Pirates scored in the 74th minute through Sepale, but just two minutes later, Chiefs were awarded a penalty, and Aiden McCarthy stepped up and converted to make it 1-1.

With six minutes added Mbuthu scored the late winner for Amakhosi following a corner kick. They finished 2024 in second place.

In the other match of the day, SuperSport United narrowly beat Sekhukhune United by 1-0. The only goal was scored by Manelisi Mazibuku right with the last kick of the match. The young Matsatsantsa finished 2024 fourth place, four points behind Stellies.
