Makhanya Warns Over Overhyping Diski’s Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates Diski Challenge (DDC) side coach Joseph Makhanya has warned about hyping the Soweto derby bigger than it is at the development level.

Makhanya said this as his side gears up for the DDC Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs at the Diski festival in Brakpan this coming weekend. Duku-Duku’s charges are currently third on the DDC log with 45 points from 22 outings, five points from leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and three from second placed Stellenbosch FC. Amakhosi are right behind them in fourth spot and only four points away.

Makhanya told iDiski Times journalist Sinethemba Makonco in the latest edition of the newspaper that as much the exposure to the expectation of the derby may be good for his players in the long run, they should not forget what’s at stake in the encounter.

“It comes with picking up points, the derby is worth three points,” Makhanya told iDiski Times.

“So it comes with picking up points. So we will try to make sure that we grind the results and get maximum points.”

The coach still believes that his side can turn things around starting with a win against Chiefs.

“Still eight games to go. It’s going to be hard to get them ready for the next one but whether we like it or not we have to be ready and show up.”
