Stressed Pirates Looking To Get Back To Winning Ways In The DDC

Orlando Pirates have a chance to return to the top of the DStv Diski Challenge when they two-time winners face Golden Arrows at Rand Stadium on Saturday morning.

Pirates were dethroned last weekend at the top when they were stunned by Mamelodi Sundowns at Giant Stadium in the Diski festival in Pretoria, with Sinethemba Badela’s side snatching a late winner on the day to stun Joseph Makhanya’s boys.

The loss saw Pirates, who had crushed Sundowns 4-1 in the reverse fixture, lose the top spot after Stellenbosch was held to a goalless draw by Chippa United, with the Cape Town side instead going top.

Pirates lie second in the table with 35 points after 17 matches, one behind Stellies and both sides have identical wins – 11.

Sundowns, who are third with 35 points, also have a chance to go above Stellies and Pirates provided both fail to get maximum points on Sunday when the Tshwane side visit cellar dwellers Polokwane City at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday (10:00).

Stellies, who won the junior league in the 2021/22 season, are also playing on Sunday when they host defending champions SuperSport United at Idas Valley Stadium.

This will allow Pirates, playing on Saturday, a chance to go back top, should they beat Arrows, who they thumped 3-0 last month in Durban at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in the DStv Diski festival.

Pirates are heavy favorites going in this encounter against Japhet Zwane’s side. In the last eight matches between the two sides, Pirates have only lost once, winning five of those along with three draws.
