Baroka Make Shock Malesela Decision

Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed that the club took the shock decision to suspend head coach Daniel Malesela with immediate effect, while Morgan Mammila has been appointed as interim coach.

The news comes as a surprise to many, with Baroka currently in the middle of the PSL relegation/promotional playoffs, having lost their first game 1-0 to AmaTuks.

Mphahlele confirmed the news to Robert Marawa, saying there have been allegations of Malesela’s conduct after the 1-0 defeat, while another case of wrongdoing refers to the coach’s actions throughout the season.

“Yes, he is suspended,” he told Robert Marawa on 947.

“We suspended him because there were allegations of wrongdoing on his side.

“You know when there are allegations, I can’t tell you what because it’s still under investigation.

“Because there is an allegation of wrongdoing, we feel that we needed to suspend him so that it can give the club the space to do proper investigation on that allegation.

“When the playoffs are done, when our allegation is done, I’m happy to inform you what the allegation was about.”

Malesela had taken over Bakgakga after matchday five, when they had started with two defeats and three draws into the 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Championship, leading them into third place on the log after collecting 46 points from 25 games.

Mphahlele also confirmed that former Chippa United coach and Technical Director, Mammila has been appointed as interim coach.

“We have appointed Morgan Mammila as an interim [coach] until the end of the playoffs,” Mphahlele added.

The Baroka chairman further stated that the club would recall Malesela, if he was found not guilty of the allegations made against him.

This publication has learnt that Mammila took charge of Wednesday morning’s training session at the club, with their next playoff fixture scheduled for Saturday against Richards Bay.

Meanwhile, the playoffs continue on Wednesday when the Natal Rich Boys host AmaTuks at 15:00.
