Bvuma Endorses Sundowns Star For Major PSL Award

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma says Ronwen Williams has done enough to win the Premier Soccer League Footballer of the Season honour.

The most coveted individual award in South African football has once again, like every season, sparked debate over who should secure it at the annual PSL awards evening.

Williams was among the favourites with Monnapule Saleng and Teboho Mokoena last campaign, which eventually was secured by Mokoena.

In a process where all 16 coaches in the DStv Premiership cast votes for three players, with number three getting one point, two getting three points and one getting five points, Williams is once again in the discussion.

“For me, Ronwen has done more than enough [to be Footballer of the Season] looking at his performances going from the previous season, coming into this season, going to AFCON, the way he’s been performing,” Bvuma said at Chiefs media day on Thursday.

“For me, I don’t see him not getting this award and he’s worked very hard. Yes, he’s a goalkeeper but it’s not like he’ll be the first goalkeeper to win Footballer of the Season. So for me, he’s done enough but whoever is voting will do the job.”

The 29-year-old who’s become the first-choice at Chiefs in recent months was named in the preliminary Bafana Bafana squad set to face Zimbabwe and Nigeria in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers alongside Williams.

And he admits he’s drawn plenty of inspiration from the skipper, who came under intense scrutiny from the public before his career-best form with Sundowns and Bafana where accolades and records are now tumbling in his way.

“A lot [of inspiration is drawn from him], he’s the national team number one, and he’s doing very well continentally, doing very well for his club,” he added.

“He’s someone that obviously every goalkeeper would like to share a dressing room within the national team and compete with.”

Williams has kept 29 clean sheets for Sundowns in 42 games this season, conceding only 15 goals across all competitions.
