Matthews Wants Sundowns To Extend Latest Record

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Tashreeq Matthews maintains that they are eager to break a few more records before the season comes to an end, despite already clinching the DStv Premiership title by amassing a remarkable point’s tally of 72.

Matthews, 23, who joined the Chloorkop-based outfit from Swedish Allsvenskan side IK Sirius, has tasted domestic success with Sundowns who bagged a seventh successive PSL title.

Sundowns lead second-placed Stellenbosch with 22 points having played a game less, and Matthews has called upon his colleagues to target 78 points in their last two fixtures.

“Well, it’s a great achievement. We made history but we have opportunity to go even further and to break it even again,” Matthews told the media.

“This time around we have two games left and the next game is against TS Galaxy to take the 72 to 75 and then we have one more, the last game which is the weekend against Cape Town City we have the opportunity to take it to 78.

“So yeah, it feels good obviously making history and breaking records as a team but we have the opportunity to take it even further.”

The Hanover Park-born midfielder has netted four goals and a single assist in 10 league outings since joining Masandawana back in January 2024, and summarised on how they intend on unlocking The Rockets’ stubborn defence which prevented Orlando Pirates from getting past them as they recorded a shock 1-0 victory over the Soweto giants this past weekend.

“We played them not too long ago and well the score-line was 3-0. Of course, as always we’ll have more of the ball possession and at times they will go into a low block and where it will be a bit challenging to get through but of course we will find ways to get behind the line and in-between the lines and we just have to make use of the opportunities to score,” Matthews added.

In closing, Matthews urged the club’s fans to rally behind them as always ahead of Tuesday’s night crunch clash away from home.

“I mean it’s always amazing having them there and for tomorrow’s game, not just tomorrow’s game, every other game, we love to see them there singing and supporting us all the way. And just for tomorrow, if you guys can come out in numbers and support us, we will appreciate it as always,” Matthews further added.

The champions have an opportunity to attain an invincible season, but will have to dispatch both TS Galaxy and Cape Town City in their last two matches in order to achieve a remarkable record no other PSL team has before.

Rulani Mokwena’s charges take the short trip to Mbombela Stadium for their league clash against Galaxy on Tuesday night, May 21, before wrapping up the season with a home tie against The Citizens at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, May 25.
