Official: Sundowns’ Next Major Signing Confirmed

IK Sirius have confirmed they have agreed to a deal with Mamelodi Sundowns for the transfer of one of South Africa’s most promising talents, Tashreeq Matthews.

The 23-year-old former Ajax Cape Town youth player has been in excellent form for the last year in Scandinavia. He helped Sirius fight a relegation battle in 2023, and his contribution of 10 goals and nine assists were key in a late resurge from the Swedish club.

He has now completed a return to South Africa, with his Swedish club announcing the deal on Friday evening.

“Sirius Football has agreed with the South African club Mamelodi Sundowns FC on the transfer of Tashreeq Matthews,” the club stated.

Matthews only joined Sirius in 2022, having previously been at Varberg, also in the Swedish Allsvenkan, where he played alongside fellow South Africans like Luke Le Roux and Keanan Ayer, amongst others.

The Hanover Park-born midfielder, who is comfortable as a ten, or as winger, left South Africa back in 2018 to join Borussia Dortmund.

However, due to registration issues, his time in Germany was short, and he was sent out on loan to clubs in the Netherlands and Sweden.

It was at Varberg though that Matthews first began to make waves, which earned him his move to Sirius.

While there has been reported interest from across Europe, it was Sundowns’ offer that was most enticing.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Sundowns can also bring the transfer of Orlando Pirates’ winger Thembinkosi Lorch over the line.
