Police Give Update On Fleurs Case

The South African Police Service have announced they’ve arrested six suspects in connection with the killing of former Kaizer Chiefs players Luke Fleurs.

Fleurs, 24, was shot dead last week Wednesday during a hijacking attempt of his car.

While Chiefs have confirmed they will hold a memorial service for the late defender, who was yet to make his official debut for the club, on Thursday, police announced that six suspects were arrested in connection with the case.

“Police arrest six suspects for the alleged hijacking and murder of Kaizer Chiefs soccer player,” the SA Police Service stated.

“The team that was appointed by the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni to trace and arrest the suspects who allegedly hijacked and killed the Kaizer Chiefs soccer player has made a breakthrough by arresting six suspects and recovering the victim’s car.

“The six suspects were traced and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 April 2024, while the vehicle that was already stripped was recovered on Monday, 08 April 2024.

“Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing.

“The team that is led by Gauteng Deputy Provincial Commissioner Crime Detection Major General Mbuso Khumalo consisting of:

  • Tracking Team
  • SAPS Provincial Investigation Unit, SAPS National Crime Intelligence,
  • SAPS Drone Unit,
  • Honeydew Detectives

“Honeydew Crime Intelligence, CAP Special Operations and Fidelity Specialized Services has been working around the clock to ensure that the suspects are arrested and brought to book.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 12 April 2024.”

Last week, police had given a brief breakdown of the shocking incident, which took the life of the young football player far too soon.

“Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has appointed a team of seasoned detectives from the provincial office to investigate and search for the suspects after a 24-year-old Premiership soccer player was shot and killed before he was hijacked his car in Honeydew on Wednesday, 03 April 2024 at approximately 20:30.

“It is reported that the victim, who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI, drove into the petrol station in 14th Avenue, corner Hendrik Potgieter. While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males, driving a white BMW 1 Series. The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle and shot him once in the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice.

“The victim was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival. Police have opened a case of murder and car hijacking for investigation, and no arrests have been made yet. Police investigations continue.

“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of the suspects to please call the nearest police station or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”
