Rulani – Why Lorch Has Been A Sub

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained their approach on integrating new signings like Thembinkosi Lorch, Matias Esquivel and others into the Sundowns setup.

Lorch has made four appearances for the club since joining from Orlando Pirates, with three of these being as a substitute.

But Mokwena explains that Lorch is still being integrated into the squad – as are players like Esquivel, Zuko Mdunyelwa, Divine Lunga, and Tashreeq Matthews – but it is not only about tactical adaptation but also adapting to the travel and being in camp every few days with Sundowns’ heavy schedule.

“We did very well and we have to continue now with the work. It’s a long way to go,” Mokwena explained.

“So the business end of the season requires a lot of sober mindedness and even if you look at the player like Lorch for an example. People say, ‘But why he’s on the bench?’

“He has to be integrated into the system, and not only about how we play but also the traveling.

“Lorch is not used to every two or three days he’s in camp, so he will come and same with Matias, same with Zuko. Divine has been excellent. Zungu was superb. Grant, zero mistakes. Ronza again also in very important moments, whether to build up or whether having to make a save.”
