What Rulani Expects From Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena says he’s not expecting an expansive style of play from Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday.

Sundowns host Amakhosi on Women’s Day at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in the most high-profile game of the 2023/24 season thus far.

While Masandawana started off the campaign with a 2-1 win over Sekhkukhune United in Polokwane, Chiefs were held to a 0-0 draw against Chippa United in Durban.

“Football is football, I don’t know, I really don’t know in which direction the game will go – I think the first few minutes won’t be so open,” Mokwena said when asked if he feels it will be an open entertaining game.

“I don’t think Chiefs… when I looked at their game against Chippa, I don’t think they are that type of team to play very openly.

“A little bit more conservative than last season… we have a lot of work to break them down, to tell you the truth because there’s a compact defensive line of four. With two screeners, it’s a common feature, you saw it against Chippa.

“But football is football, the one who scores the first and earliest goals, has even better possibilities because then the game produces more transitions than you normally would have.

“And you know the PSL, when you have transitions in the PSL, you have a lot of possibilities to score.”

Sundowns and Chiefs do battle in the capital city on Wednesday afternoon 15h00.
