Bafana Bafana overturned a first-leg deficit to beat Malawi 2-0 and seal qualification to the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship after a tough battle at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday afternoon.
It was a first half dominated by the makeshift South African team, as Malawi looked to defend their 1-0 lead from the first leg with a low block.
But Molefi Nsteki’s team kept knocking with the Bullets struggling to deal with Neo Maema, Siyanda Msani, Kamogelo Sebelele and Victor Letsoalo.
It was Letsoalo who would open the scoring in just the 12th minute, with a well-taken goal, that levelled the tie. It was his fifth goal in national team colours.
South Africa continued to dominate, but Malawi’s defence held strong in the first half as the home side headed into the break with the slender lead.
It was a similar state of affairs after the break, as South Africa looked for the winner with Letsoalo going close again right after kick off.
Kamohelo Mahlatsi played a huge role in setting up Maema for the late goal which sealed the win for them and sent them to CHAN, winning 2-1 on aggregate.
