Broos Clear On Zwane Ahead Of AFCON

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos says they may have to overlook Themba Zwane’s selection for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations if he doesn’t feature for Mamelodi Sundowns in the coming weeks.

Zwane, 35, was overlooked by Broos at the start of his tenure but after uproar from supporters and media alike, he eventually made a u-turn and became one of the influential figures of the national team squad in his traditional 10 role.

However, there’s now doubts about his future ahead of AFCON due to his injuries suffered this season, but Broos says the door remains open for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, should he not be fit enough to compete in Morocco between December and January.

“Themba… I will see, he’s injured at the moment again, I don’t know if he will not play in the next two weeks – we have to forget him,” Broos said about the influential Sundowns captain.

“He didn’t play all season, so I think for AFCON, it will be difficult for Themba, very difficult. But yeah – I still hope for next year – but we will see.”

Broos named his 23-man squad for their final preparation fixture for AFCON as they host Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next weekend.
