City Confirm First January Exit

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has confirmed the exit of Colombian forward Juan Camilo Zapata after one year with the club.

Zapata joined City in December 2022 on a four-year contract after he had a successful season with CD Hermanos Colmenarez in Venezuela, netting 19 goals in 35 appearances.

But the 29-year-old didn’t have the impact he was expected to have at City, as he only scored one goal in 23 appearances.

The Cape Town-based side have now released Zapata to open up a foreign spot for DR Congo international Nathan Fasika Idumba when the season resumes in February.

Tinkler confirmed the exit of Zapata when he was asked whether Fasika would be take Zapata’s foreign slot.

“Yes,” he replied.

“We have other plans, but I’ll leave it for now.”

The Citizens finished 2023 sitting second on the DStv Premiership league table, six points behind table toppers Mamelodi Sundowns who have three games in hand.
