Former Orlando Pirates captain Benedict Vilakazi has thrown Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe into the coach of the season award conversation, saying it’s not very clear as he feels many other coaches have improved this term.
Miguel Cardoso just clinched the league title with Mamelodi Sundowns with a game to spare reaching 70 points.

The Portuguese mentor joined the club in December 2024 taking charge of 20 games winning 17 times, drawing once while suffering two defeats and ‘Tso’ says he wouldn’t give it to Cardoso because of his late start, nor would he give it to former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro because the latter didn’t win the league.
The former Bucs midfield maestro believes other coaches like Phuti Mohafe deserves a mention in the conversation.
“Unfortunately, when you win the Betway Premiership you are the coach of the season,” said Tso on iDiski TV.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’ve played five games or eight games but because you’ve won the Betway Premiership you have to get that. If it wasn’t about that then I was going to give it to Phuti [Mohafe] because I believe he did very well last season and this season.
“Unfortunately, you have to choose one. That’s the sad part. Jose’s [Jose Riviero] problem is that he didn’t win the league he won a trophy, so he can be the coach of the MTN8 tournament. Same applies to Clinton Larsen with Magesi for winning the Carling Cup even [Nasreddine] Nabi now having won the Nedbank Cup. It’s something debatable.
“Anyway, Cardoso is the coach of the season he won the Betway Premiership done.”
