Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Keagan Dolly has strongly dismissed media reports that he used to take a staggering R1 million monthly salary home during his time at Naturena.
Dolly, 31, joined Chiefs from French Ligue 1 outfit Montpellier in July 2021 after over four years in France having initially departed Mamelodi Sundowns for greener pastures in 2017.
Speaking to Robert Marawa on MSWon947, Dolly, who was a huge coup for Amakhosi at the time, was in awe of his supposed R1 million monthly salary at Chiefs, saying he would be on holiday if that had been the case.
“Were you earning that R1 million? Marawa probed Dolly.
“Never! I wish. If I was, I would’ve been on a beach right now.”
Marawa further added on the rumours that Dolly was reportedly earning R1 million at the French league side, almost equivalent to what Chiefs had to match to lure the Bafana Bafana midfielder to Naturena.
“But who said I earned a million in Montpellier? Dolly asked.
The former School of Excellence graduate admitted that he had no idea where the rumour emanated from.
“I don’t know,” he said.
“There was a story on twitter [X] one day that I was earning R1,4 million, and I was shocked as well.
“Because that’s nowhere near that. I don’t know.
“A lot of people did [believe he was earning R1 million]. That’s why I say, that adds more pressure on me.
“People look at you like, ‘You’re the highest player in the league, not only at the club, but what are you giving us? What are you doing?
“So, every time I step on the training field or step onto the playing field, I have to handle myself this way because people expect that from the highest paid player.
“So, that comes with more pressure and it gave me a sense of trying to do more than what I had to do at the time.
“I felt like doing everyone else’s role and forgetting about playing my own game.
“That was lies [R1 million salary] and it just brought a lot of pressure,” Dolly added.
