Durban City are edging ever closer to returning to the Betway Premiership after being the only side to secure a victory in the top five of the Motsepe Foundation Championship title race this weekend.
The People’s Team claimed a much-needed 1-0 victory at a soaked Chatsworth Stadium on Friday afternoon against Upington City. Joslin Kamatuka’s deflected header was enough to see the KwaZulu-Natal-based side move to 45 points after 23 games, and eight points clear of second-placed Kruger United.
On Saturday at the Giant Stadium, JDR Stars and Milford FC played to a pulsating 2-2 draw. Prince Nxumalo and Ishmael Wadi scored for The Hammer Boys while Bulelani Sigomoshe and Nqaba Xulu netted for Milford.
Title challengers ORBIT College suffered a 1-0 defeat against Eastern Cape-based side Highbury FC with Lulama Maqoka scoring deep in the second half to seal the victory for the newcomers.
Casric Stars threw away a 2-0 lead by allowing Leruma United to come back and equalize to make it 2-2 and secure a point away from home. Stars remained in touching distance for the playoffs as they have 36 points sitting in fourth place.

The Limpopo Derby between Black Leopards and Baroka FC did not disappoint, also ending in a 2-2. Bakgaga threw away a two-goal lead as Lidoda Duvha rallied back to secure a point at home to give themselves a chance of at least qualifying for the promotional playoffs.
Relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs fought tooth and nail in their 1-1 draw against Kruger, but it wasn’t to be. United opened the scoring in the first half courtesy of Thulani Ndlela. The Urban Warriors threw the kitchen sink in the second half up until Khaya Mfecane managed to get an important equalizer to make it 1-1.
