Johnson Reveals Chiefs Targets, Makes Sangoma Claim

After their goalless draw with Moroka Swallows, Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has outlined their targets for the remainder of the season, while jokingly stating that Chiefs’ opponents always come with five sangomas.

The draw sees Chiefs sitting in sixth place on the DStv Premiership table, with 26 points after 18 games, with both TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune United just behind them, but with games in hand.

Johnson said their target remains the same as when he took over, to finish as high as possible, and says they will treat each remaining game like a cup final.

“Our target is one that we’ve always had, since the beginning of the time when I took over, is to win as many games and get as high as possible in the in the PSL League,” Johnson said after the game.

“So now we’ve come back, and because we let ourselves down in the Nedbank, we have got to make sure that every game we play from now on is a cup final. Because we also know that every team we play against plays against Chiefs as if it was a cup final. So we’ve got our work cut out for us.

“And we’ve just got make sure that we stand up for our game for as long as we can. We haven’t lost a game in the last six. So we can take a little bit of maybe arrogance from that but we need the points. The bottom line is we need the points. A draw today is two points [lost] first.”

When questioned about Saturday’s performance and being alerted that it didn’t look like the players had that “cup final” mentality, Johnson admitted that their performance wasn’t good enough.

“This is our problem, we have a crop of athletes, that any one of the 30 have to put up their hands and we need to make sure that we come to this field and play better than we did today,” he added.

“And you mentioned the same things that we worried about that every time we play someone is in a worse position than us. But then you must also believe that anybody who plays Chiefs and not only now but since the last eight years, anybody who plays Chiefs always puts up their hand, and instead of going to one sangoma they’re going to five.”

Chiefs are back in action on Tuesday, when they will host Golden Arrows, who are on a 10-match losing streak, at FNB Stadium.
