Lakay Dents Al Ahly Title Hopes With Memorable Display

South African forward Fagrie Lakay produced a Man of the Match display for Cleopatra FC as he dented Al Ahly’s Egyptian Premier League title hopes.

With the league moving into the Championship Play-Off round, where the top seven teams will now face off for the league title and CAF inter-club continental spots, Cleopatra, a surprise title-challenger this season continued to impress.

Lakay, who has been central to their impressive run this season, netted the opener with a stunning effort from way outside the area but Yasser Ebrahim’s late strike for the visitors saw the two sides share the spoils.

Lakay led the press from the front, winning six duels in his second striker role, making three key passes and was awarded the Player of the Match after the game.

The league is currently led by Zamalek SC with 46 points, while Pyramids – who have a game in hand are on 43, Ahly with 41 and Cleopatra with 39.

Lakay has scored 11 goals with 12 assists in 53 games for Cleopatra across all competitions since joining the club from Pyramids, initially on loan before the deal was made permanent at the start of the 2025/26 campaign.

He’s earned seven caps for the senior national team since making his senior debut as a 17-year-old back in 2014 under then head coach Shakes Mashaba.
