Mngqithi Admits Vilakazi Concerns

Mamelodi Sundowns have yet to make a decision on the future of midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi after his peripheral role in the 2021/22 season, coach Manqoba Mngqithi confirmed.

Vilakazi, 32, is ranked as one of the finest players in the South African top-flight but since recovering from a long-term injury he’s found it tough to break back into the Masandawana starting line-up again.

Currently on course for a historic domestic treble, ‘Vila’, who joined the club in July 2016 has been limited to just 11 appearances, with three coming as starts, across all competitions.

With five consecutive league titles to his name, he’s firmly engraved in part of the glittering history of Sundowns and while Mngqithi admits it’s concerning that he’s not reached the levels they are accustomed to in years gone by – he affirmed they still believe in his talents.

“It’s true ‘Vila’ has not played many matches this season which should be a big concern for me as a coach and also for him as a player but the truth of the matter is, we know his quality, we know what he can give us,” he said ahead of the DStv Premiership finale against Royal AM.

“Unfortunately from time to time when he gets injured he finds it difficult to get back into the team, it’s not in our control, it’s very difficult for everyone. It’s even worse when the player himself feels he deserves to play more than what he’s playing.

“He hasn’t raised that concern because he understands his situation. We haven’t made a decision in that regard [on his future]. I would not want to dwell too much on it.”

The 32-year-old has featured 139 times for the Brazilians, scoring 29 goals and registering 21 assists since his move from the now-defunct Bidvest Wits.
