Mokwena Not Happy Despite Historic Chiefs Win

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena was not pleased with the overall performance of his side after the 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.

Masandawana secured a record 12th consecutive league win, beating their own record from 2007 and their first-ever league double over Amakhosi.

It was achieved with an incredible opening first half, in which they dominated possession and found the opener when Neo Maema finished off a slick move where Masandawana carved Chiefs open with ease.

However, Arthur Zwane’s side fought back in the second half and could have found an equaliser had it not been for their poor decision-making as Sundowns were guilt of several defensive errors and lost possession in key areas – but went unpunished.

“Congratulations to the players, it wasn’t easy, but maybe from a tactical perspective, maybe not one of the games that I enjoyed so much you know,” Mokwena said in response to his thoughts on the game.

“I have to speak to the players first about the performance and generally it was just too open, not enough control, but the reasons for that, I’m going to speak to the players first before I come out in the media about it.”

While Mokwena refused to go into detail about what he felt was not up too standard, he suggested their lack of control in the second half was the reason behind his statements.

“Not that I don’t want to talk about it, just out of respect for my players, I want to speak to the players first and review it with the players first. They must be privileged to hear my opinions first before the public and they haven’t heard my opinion.

“But do not misinterpret that for being dissatisfied, no I’m not dissatisfied with the efforts of commitment but there’s more to a football match than just effort and commitment. [The] organisational forms were good but generally I felt the game was too open.”
