Should Chiefs Have Gotten A Penalty In Derby? Hlungwani Explains

Kaizer Chiefs attacker Mduduzi Shabalala was correctly denied a penalty by referee Eugene Mdluli, according to former FIFA official Victor Hlungwani.

With Chiefs 1-0 up, Shabalala went down in the box in the 14th minute after what appeared to be a clean tackle from Orlando Pirates young defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

A section of the Amakhosi faithful, including head coach Nasreddine Nabi, were convinced that they should’ve been awarded a penalty but replay showed that referee Mdluli was indeed spot on in his decision not to penalize Mbokazi.

“Here is what we call Shabalala who went in there and Mbokazi made a tackle,” Hlungwani said on Soccerzone.

“When he makes a contact, is there contact between Shabalala and Mbokazi?

“We are going to show it to you that there’s no contact here. Let’s have a look. You can see it’s right to make a tackle. Shabalala jumped and look at it there, there’s no contact.

“No penalty, no penalty!

“So, this is correct decision by Eugene Mdluli not to award a penalty.”
