Stellenbosch FC‘s impressive foray in Africa came to an end after they went down 1-0 on aggregate to Simba SC in their CAF Confederation Cup semifinal second leg tie at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
Both sides had a go at each other and Simba were awarded an 11th-minute penalty after Kibu Denis went down in the box. VAR however overturned the decision.
Andre de Jong’s glancing header in the 40th minute sailed just over the bar as both sides headed into the halftime break still locked at 0-0 with the Reds of Msimbazi still having the advantage.
Ten minutes into the second period, Stellies were awarded a penalty for what the referee deemed a handful, but again overturned the decision after VAR consultation.
Elie Mpanzu brought a great save out of Oscarine Masuluke in the 73rd minute with a fingertip stop to keep the score goalless.
In the 75th minute, Genino Palace came off the bench to score Stellies’ equalizer but after another VAR look, the goal was chalked off for an offside on De Jong.
In the end, Fadlu Davids’ charges held on to seal a memorable CAF Confed Cup final berth where they will meet tonight’s late kick-off winner between Constantine and RS Berkane.
